Sept 1:Preparation (Soaking and Liming)
The raw hides are first soaked in water to rehydrate them.
Then, they are treated with a liming solution, usually a mixture of lime and water, which helps to soften the hide and loosen the hair and flesh.
This process also raises the pH level of the skin, preparing it for the subsequent tanning step.
Sept 2:Tanning (Vegetable Tanning)
After the preparation, the hides are placed in a tannin-rich solution derived from various plant barks, fruits, or other vegetable materials.
This process can take several weeks to months, depending on the thickness of the hide and the desired characteristics of the final leather.
The tannins from the plants combine with the collagen in the skin to stabilize it and prevent decay, transforming it into leather.
Sept 3:Drying and Conditioning
Once the tanning process is complete, the leather is removed from the tannin solution and is initially air-dried.
It is then conditioned to achieve the desired texture and suppleness, which may involve stretching, smoothing, and oiling.
Conditioning can also involve using tools like mallets or frames to shape and dry the leather evenly.
Sept 4:Finishing (Dressing and Dyeing)
The dried leather is then subjected to various finishing processes to achieve the desired look and feel.
This may include dyeing the leather to achieve specific colors, applying finishes or waxes to protect the leather and enhance its appearance, and conditioning with oils or greases to add water resistance and softness.
Finally, the leather is inspected for quality, cut to size, and prepared for end-use, whether it be for crafting leather goods or other applications.
